HOUSE PARTY: Less than a month before voting day, Gov. Pete Wilson recruited volunteers for his campaign and urged supporters to keep up the fight at a house party in Burbank on Saturday. Burbank school board member Joe Hooven hosted the gathering, which was also attended by state Sen. Newt Russell (R-Glendale) and Assemblyman James Rogan (R-Glendale). . . . The house party is one of 1,030 being held for Wilson in nearly every county in the state, a spokeswoman said.

BRUSH FIRE: A fast-moving blaze scorched more than 1,000 acres of land in Agua Dulce on Saturday. No one was hurt and no structures were damaged in the fire, the cause of which has not been determined (B1). . . . About 350 county and U.S. Forest Service firefighters fought the wind-whipped flames, which forced the closure of the Antelope Valley Freeway for several hours.

FINE DINING: “Idiot” and “go to hell” are common words and phrases at Phil’s Diner in North Hollywood, and the customers couldn’t be happier (B1). . . . After all, where else can you get a “go-to-hell omelet” or the “idiots’ mish mosh”--home fried potatoes, diced ham, salami, bologna, pastrami, American and Swiss cheese, eggs, fresh spinach and mushroom, all scrambled together--for $4.35?

ON A ROLL: Fueled by a ground game that amassed 280 yards, Cal State Northridge cruised to a 40-14 win in a non-conference football game at Sonoma State (C14). . . . Running backs Shaun Coleman, Mark Harper and Darren Walton carried the load for the Matadors (3-2), who rolled up a 34-0 lead in notching their second consecutive easy victory.

WOUNDED: A resident of a Northridge halfway home was shot and seriously injured by a police officer early Saturday. . . . Police say Lawrence Friedman, 24, brandished a knife at two officers who were called to the house to check on a domestic dispute. “He was hit in the spine,” Friedman’s mother said. “The doctors tell us our son may never walk again.” (B1)
