ATLANTIC COAST ROUNDUP : N.C. State Upset by Louisville

Louisville linebacker Alan Campos, a junior from Miami, set up a touchdown with his first fumble recovery in the fourth quarter, then ran 20 yards with his second as Louisville upset 18th-ranked North Carolina State, 35-14, Saturday in a nonconference game at Louisville.

Campos’ recoveries killed any chance of a comeback after North Carolina State (4-1) fell behind, 21-14. Campos also led Louisville with eight tackles.

Brian Fitzgerald fumbled after catching Geoff Bender’s pass at the North Carolina State 20, and Campos returned it to the six. Three plays later, Anthony Shelman scored from the two to give Louisville (3-2) a 28-14 advantage with 9:21 to go.

On North Carolina State’s ensuing possession, Fitzgerald again fumbled on the 20 and this time Campos returned it for a touchdown.

No. 14 North Carolina 31, Georgia Tech 24--Leon Johnson ran for two touchdowns, including the tie-breaking score with 2:27 left, as the Tar Heels (4-1, 1-1) held on at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Quarterback Jason Stanicek became North Carolina’s total offense leader, running for 54 yards and passing for 120 to increase his total to 5,008. Charlie Justice held the old mark of 4,883.

Virginia 42, Wake Forest 6--Mike Groh came off the bench to throw three touchdown passes, and the Cavaliers’ defense was impressive again in an ACC victory over the Demon Deacons at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Groh, whose father coached the Demon Deacons from 1981-86, threw scoring passes of five, 12 and 14 yards after coming in late in the second quarter for injured starter Symmion Willis.

The Cavalier defense had four interceptions, a fumble recovery, a blocked punt and six sacks as Virginia (4-1, 2-1) won its 11th in a row over Wake Forest (2-4, 0-3).
