Unfinished Symph Upset at Hawthorne
Chrysalis House, an 11-1 shot, beat Southland-based Unfinished Symph by a head to win the $150,000 Hawthorne Derby at Hawthorne in Cicero, Ill.
Ridden by Mark Guidry, Chrysalis House covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:51 4/5 over a yielding turf course.
The loss marked the third consecutive second-place finish for favored Unfinished Symph, who moved prematurely to the lead, drew clear in the stretch, then was caught at the wire.
Unfinished Symph, the Will Rogers and Cinema Handicap winner, had lost the La Jolla Handicap by a nose, then was beaten by a half-length by Ocean Crest in the Del Mar Derby.
Marvin’s Faith, who beat Unfinished Symph at 16-1 in the La Jolla, was third in the Hawthorne Derby.
