COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Recovers to Win, 6-5

UC Irvine rallied from a three-goal deficit in the second half to defeat host UC San Diego, 6-5, in nonconference water polo Saturday.

The eighth-ranked Anteaters trailed, 5-2, in the third quarter before freshman Ryan Bailey scored. Sophomore Ofer Horn scored two goals in the fourth quarter to tie the score with three minutes left, and sophomore Omar Amr scored the game-winning goal for UCI with 2:03 remaining. At the Southern California College Invitational cross-country meet:

SCC men finish first--Jason Schaeger was second with a time of 27 minutes 51 seconds as Southern California College finished first with 28 points. Wess Hinson finished third for the Vanguards in 28:00 over 8,000 meters at Back Bay.

Goshu Tadese of Fresno Pacific, which was second with 56 points, won the invitational with a time of 26:09.

Concordia finished fifth with 91 points.

SCC women finish third--Caren Anderson, who graduated from Mission Viejo, finished third with a time of 20:55 for Southern California College. The Vanguards finished third with 60 points, only six points behind first-place La Verne (54 points).

La Verne’s Jill Perkins won the 5,000-meter race at Back Bay with a time of 20:13.

Concordia finished in a tie for fourth place with Whittier (91 points).

In the Cal Poly Pomona Invitational women’s cross-country meet:

UC Irvine 25, UC Santa Barbara 40, Cal Poly Pomona 61--Holiday Molway (18:55), JoJo Yaba (18:57) and Kay Nekota (19:07) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively to lead UC Irvine to the meet title.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Chapman 5, UC Santa Cruz 0--Armando Orizaba scored three goals and Gary Hurtarte added two to lead host Chapman (7-3-1).

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 1, USC 1 (OT)--Caren Morgan scored one goal and goalkeeper Heidi Clauss recorded six saves for Cal State Fullerton (4-5).

Chapman 7, Southern California College 1--Cindy LeClair scored four goals to lead Chapman. Southern California College dropped to 5-6-1.

Oregon State 3, UC Irvine 1--Tracie Ann Awadallah scored a goal in the 80th minute for host Irvine. Nicole Kelly recorded four saves for the Anteaters (6-6-1).

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Pacific 3, CS Fullerton 0--Dominique Benton-Bozman had 11 kills for Pacific in the 15-4, 15-7, 15-0 victory. Fullerton drops to 0-17 and 0-7.

In Golden State Athletic Conference volleyball:

Concordia 3, Cal Baptist 2--Amy Bonacorsi had 16 kills to lead host Concordia, 2-15, 12-15, 15-10, 15-11, 15-6.

Southern California College 3, Point Loma Nazarene 1--Southern California College came back from an 8-1 deficit in the fourth game to beat Pt. Loma Nazarene, 15-10, 15-2, 12-15, 15-10.

In nonconference volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, William & Mary 0--Nichelle Burton had 24 kills to lead host Long Beach State, 15-8, 16-14, 15-1. The 49ers improved to 11-3.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo:

USC 15, Long Beach State 12--Travis England had four goals for visiting Long Beach State (2-12, 0-5).
