Orange County Almanac

Willows were the first trees planted by the German winemakers who settled Anaheim in 1857.

The 40,000 trees, which outlined the colonists’ 1,165 acres, were intended to keep wild horses from eating the vineyards.

Another old-timer in the county’s tree history is the eucalyptus. Introduced near Orange in 1870, the tree was touted as a high profit-maker. But the boom went bust when local eucalyptus trees failed to grow straight enough to be used as railroad ties. They didn’t cut well for furniture-making, either.

You can view original eucalyptus groves along Sand Canyon Road near the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
