SUNLAND : Residents to Clean Tujunga Ponds Area
Sunland residents have organized a cleanup of the Tujunga Ponds, a spot near the point where Foothill Boulevard crosses over the Tujunga Wash that has been polluted by litter and illegal swimmers.
“It’s trashed everywhere,” said Phil Tabbi, a community police representative, who is organizing the Oct. 22 cleanup. “The fences have been cut.”
The ponds are within the protected Tujunga Wash and swimming there is illegal. However, trespassers have cut the protective wire fencing and have been swimming at the ponds “for some time,” Tabbi said. He visited the site recently and saw piles of garbage, including disposable diapers, three feet high, he said.
Meanwhile, police have started to cite the illegal swimmers, he said.
The cleanup already has local 4-H clubs and Scouting, equestrian and church groups pitching in to help. But more volunteers are welcome, Tabbi said. The cleanup, which also includes local streams, will start at 9 a.m.
A small pedestrian bridge and picnic benches have been broken as well, Tabbi said. Two local women had been trying to clean up the area on their own, but they can only do so much, he added.
