CALABASAS : Repairs Planned on Flood-Prone Road
Repair work is scheduled to begin this month on a stretch of Old Topanga Canyon Road in an unincorporated area near the city of Calabasas, county officials say.
The stretch of road, north of Zuniga Road, is prone to flooding and is considered a safety hazard, according to a statement issued by Supervisor Ed Edelman.
The hillsides above the road were denuded by last year’s wildfires, and officials fear that runoff will create flooding on the road below, said Donna Guyovich, a spokeswoman for the county’s Public Works Department.
A contract has been awarded for $196,101 to Seasand Construction Co. of Lawndale, according to Edelman. The work will include construction of a double-barreled, reinforced concrete box culvert that will replace existing pipe.
Eight trees will be removed because they interfere with the operation of the culvert, Guyovich said.
The state Office of Emergency Services and Federal Emergency Management Agency will reimburse the county for a portion of the cost, Edelman said.
The project is expected to take about 50 working days and end in December, he said. Traffic on Old Topanga Canyon Road may be reduced to one lane after construction begins.
Travelers concerned about delays are advised to seek alternative routes, Guyovich said.
