OXNARD : $2.2 Million in Funds Sought for Housing
The Oxnard City Council has voted 3 to 1 to seek $2.2 million in federal funds for a new public housing program that keeps homeless parents from losing custody of their children by giving the family a place to live.
Federal officials have invited the Oxnard Housing Authority to apply for the Section 8 Family Unification Program, which would provide funding for 50 rental units for separated families.
The $77.5-million program, administered by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, provides Section 8 rental vouchers to parents whose children are at risk of being put in foster homes or are already in out-of-home care due to the family’s inadequate living conditions.
Families must meet regular Section 8 requirements for income to be eligible. Ventura and Camarillo already receive HUD family unification funding.
The Ventura County Public Social Services Child Welfare Agency would refer homeless families to the program. The agency prepared a report in 1992 detailing the need for a unification program.
Councilman Mike Plisky voted against seeking the funds Tuesday, and Councilman Bedford Pinkard abstained.
