Mike Mitchell, Stanford’s leading rusher, probably won’t play against USC on Saturday, Coach Bill Walsh said Thursday.
A 210-pound sophomore, Mitchell was averaging 7.5 yards per game and had gained 323 yards in only three games before spraining his ankle. Senior Ethan Allen will start for Mitchell.

John Robinson on his Pacific 10-leading punter, John Stonehouse, who has taken some big hits lately:
“If you have a good punter, the penalty (for roughing the kicker) should be 30 yards. He’s as good a punter as I’ve been around. He’s handled bad snaps and gotten the ball off well.”
Stonehouse, a junior, tops the conference with a 42.8 average, just ahead of UCLA’s Darren Schager.
