SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

One needed only to look at the sparkling-clean uniform of Daylon McCutcheon to guess how Alemany High fared in its toughest football test of the season.

The standout tailback for Bishop Amat sprained an ankle in practice this week, and would have played only if needed in the Del Rey league opener Friday night.

Thanks to a stubborn defense and costly turnovers by Alemany, Bishop Amat didn’t need McCutcheon. The Lancers, ranked No. 1 in the nation by several publications, romped, 49-0, at Bishop Amat.

Alemany (1-3-2, 0-1 in league play) fumbled the first two times it touched the ball. After a fumble, recovered by Alemany, on the opening kickoff, tailback Armone Lochard dropped a pitch on the first play from scrimmage.

Defensive end Ace Paule recovered for Bishop Amat (6-0, 1-0) at the Alemany five-yard line and tailback Randy Guanko scored on the next play to give the Lancers the lead with a minute elapsed.

“That wasn’t a real good start for us,” Alemany Coach Pat Degnan said. “To give the No. 1 team in the country the ball on your five-yard line right from the start, it’s not going to be a good day.”

Alemany was plagued by turnovers the entire first half. Linebacker Ramogi Huma returned an interception 18 yards to put Bishop Amat ahead, 21-0, eight minutes into the game and defensive back Roger Ollano returned a tipped pass 30 yards for a score midway through the second quarter.

Alemany was held to minus-10 yards of offense in the first half and gained 15 yards in the game. The Indian’s initial first down came with eight minutes to play.

Eleven different backs carried the ball for Bishop Amat, which did not attempt a pass in the second half.
