Torrance School Board Unanimous in Opposing Prop. 187
The Torrance school board passed a resolution Monday opposing Proposition 187, the initiative that would prohibit schools from educating children of illegal immigrants.
“It is not in the public interest to create an uneducated, unemployable and medically untreated underclass within our midst, an underclass that could eventually cost the taxpayers of the State of California far more in services required . . . than it would to inoculate and educate,” the resolution said.
The board voted unanimously to support the resolution, which called the ballot measure “counterproductive to rational public policy” and “potentially harmful to the children of the Torrance community.”
Several educational organizations that also oppose the proposition, including the California School Boards Assn. and the Assn. of California School Administrators, have passed similar resolutions.
Board member John Eubanks said the Torrance Unified School District could end up paying legal fees and administrative costs caused by the proposition. In addition, Eubanks said, there would be no guarantee that surplus funds generated by cutting back on the number of students would go to schools.
“The overall reaction of the board was that something needs to be done but this isn’t a solution,” Eubanks said.
