Satire for a Serious Cause
What’s the latest scoop on President Clinton or O.J. Simpson? Just ask Paul Krassner.
Satirist Krassner, along with other
top comedians, will kick off “Cabaret Au Lait” tonight in Brentwood.
The evening is appropriately named since the comedy, music and theater take place at the French Roast Coffee House.
A benefit for Turning Point Shelter of Santa Monica, which is sponsoring the show in cooperation with Parlor Performances, the hourlong program includes music along with performances by other local comedians. Krassner headlines this evening’s show. Considered by many to be the Bob Hope of counterculture, Krassner will deliver a routine filled with biting commentary on current news events as well as some of his standard material.
“If I had a lot of money, I would donate that,” said Krassner, 62, a resident of Venice. “All I can do is donate my talent. The cause is good.”
With the help of generous performers who will donate their time, event organizers hope this inaugural event will brew into a monthly series. Proceeds will benefit Turning Point, a project that provides transitional housing for people seeking permanent jobs and housing. It is a part of the Ocean Park Community Center.
“(We hope) this is a way to introduce more people to Turning Point,” said Kathryn Turpin, a Santa Monica resident and longtime volunteer for the nonprofit organization. “We want to develop support in the community and provide informal, inexpensive entertainment.”
