Craig Lentzsch, a former executive of Greyhound Lines Inc., was named the new president and chief executive of the struggling bus company on Thursday.

Lentzsch, 46, was also elected to the Dallas-based firm’s board. He will assume the job Nov. 15. He succeeds Frank Schmieder, who resigned in August under pressure from Connor, Clark & Co., the Toronto-based investment firm that is Greyhound’s largest shareholder.

Lentzsch, one of the three investors who bought Greyhound from Dial Corp. in 1987, is chief financial officer of Motor Coach Industries International Inc., a Phoenix-based bus manufacturer that is Greyhound’s largest bus provider.

He was named last month to one of the three board seats Greyhound agreed to give Connor Clark, and Lentzsch said in a telephone interview Thursday that he has the investment firm’s support.

Before joining Greyhound, Lentzsch co-founded BusLease Inc. BusLease was merged with Greyhound in 1987 when Lentzsch, P. Anthony Lannie and Fred Currey, former chairman and chief executive officer, bought Greyhound form Dial Corp. for $350 million.

Lentzsch served as vice chairman and executive vice president of Greyhound from March, 1987 to December, 1989. He said he left Greyhound because of “philosophical differences” with Currey.

In 1991, Lentzsch acquired the assets of BusLease from Greyhound’s estate after the company filed for bankruptcy. A year later, the company was sold to Motor Coach Industries. Greyhound emerged from Chapter 11 protection in October, 1991.
