BIG EIGHT ROUNDUP : Oklahoma Survives in Kansas

Scott Blanton kicked two 39-yard field goals in the final 6:48 Saturday, rallying self-destructive Oklahoma over Kansas, 20-17, in Lawrence, Kan., as the Sooners avoided their worst record in nearly 30 years.

Kansas, 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Big Eight, took a 17-7 lead with two third-quarter touchdowns, hoping for its fourth victory over Oklahoma (4-3, 2-1) in 30 years.

But Dwayne Chandler scored on a short run to make it 17-14 with 13 minutes to go. Then Blanton, who had missed four of seven attempts from beyond 30 yards, made two pressure-packed kicks.

His 39-yarder with 6:48 to go, following Garrick McGee’s 23-yard pass to Albert Hall on third down, forged a 17-17 tie at the 6:48 mark.

Kansas was driving a few minutes later when Ashaundai Smith caught a pass for a 13-yard gain but fumbled without being hit. Darius Johnson recovered for Oklahoma, and McGee drove Blanton into position for a second 39-yarder with 1:38 to go.

Oklahoma State 31, Iowa State 31--Ty Stewart missed a 31-yard field goal with 3:41 to play, allowing the Cowboys (3-3-1, 0-2-1) to escape with a tie at Stillwater, Okla., keeping the Cyclones (0-6-1, 0-2-1) from winning for the first time.

Oklahoma State had a chance to win as time expired, but Lawson Vaughn’s 53-yard field goal sailed wide right.

Iowa State tied despite rolling up 501 yards behind the play of quarterback Todd Doxzon. He completed 13 of 21 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 91 yards.

Stewart’s missed field goal came after Iowa State had driven from its 20 to the Oklahoma State 14. David Thompson ran for 155 yards and two touchdowns in helping Oklahoma State compile 431 yards, but the Cowboys couldn’t hold a lead. They led, 24-14, in the first half and, 31-24, in the second half, but the Cyclones rallied.
