FileNet Corp.: Ted Smith, president and chief executive of the Costa Mesa-based company, was selected CEO of the Year by the Software Council of Southern California last week. Smith said the company had made a difficult but correct decision to shift its focus from computer hardware to software programs in recent years. The shift “was a major risk, but it’s a strategy that paid off,” Smith said. The company now focuses on business computer programs to manage images, data and text.

The Software Council, a nonprofit industry trade organization, is made up of software development organizations and computer hardware and systems companies.
