LULAC Honors Vice Chancellor

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has honored a Rancho Santiago College administrator as the group’s outstanding educator of the year, a college district spokesman said.

The group honored Edward Hernandez, the executive vice chancellor of student affairs, during an awards ceremony recently.

Hernandez was chosen for his contributions to educating Latinos and for being a positive role model, district spokesman Dale Ruhe said.

“I was extremely honored and very appreciative of the award,” said Hernandez, a 50-year-old Anaheim Hills resident. “The award is really in recognition of the great things we do for the community at the college.”

Hernandez has served in several school and college districts as both a teacher and an administrator. *

Grant Awarded to Produce Videos

Fullerton College has received a $100,000 grant from the California Community College Chancellor’s office to produce a series of half-hour videos dealing with “the changing culture in the workplace.”

College officials said the videos will emphasize the importance of education. By the year 2000, 75% of all jobs will require a college education, officials said.

The eight videos will probably be used by other community colleges as well as school districts and cable television stations.

Researcher Wins $200,000 Award

Ken W.Y. Cho, an assistant professor of developmental and cell biology at UC Irvine, has been named a 1994 Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences.

He will receive $200,000 from the Pew Charitable Trusts of Philadelphia. He will be paid $50,000 a year for four years in support of his research, which focuses on the molecular bases of growth factors involved in the earliest stages of life.

Cho came to UCI from UCLA, where he held a postdoctoral research position and was an experimental embryologist.

Heavy-Weather Sailing Talk Set

A lecture on sailing will be offered this week at the Orange Coast College Sailing Center.

Author John Jourdane will give a talk entitled “Heavy-Weather Sailing” on Friday.

Admission is $8.50. The college’s Sailing Center is at 1801 W. Coast Highway in Newport Beach. The lecture runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The lecture is part of a series on boating held at the college this month.

Other lectures included “Cruising Tips for the South Pacific” and a talk on how to financing a sailing trip.
