SANTA PAULA : Planner Quits, Will Bid on City Project

An architect who has served on the Santa Paula Planning Commission for six years has resigned his post so he can bid on designs for a city improvement project.

W. John Kulwiec announced his resignation earlier this month as the Santa Paula City Council was preparing to fill two other vacancies on the seven-member advisory panel.

“I knew they were contemplating new commissioners, and I thought maybe it’s time I give them more room for positions,” Kulwiec said Monday. “I’ve worked very hard trying to bring my expertise to the commission, but six years is a long time.”

Kulwiec, the principal partner in a Camarillo architectural firm bearing his name, said he hopes to win a contract from Santa Paula for designing portions of the city’s downtown improvement project.

City Administrator Arnold Dowdy said the bid requests have only recently been sent out, and that a design contract would not be awarded for several weeks.

Last week the City Council filled the two other vacancies on the commission, naming bookkeeper William H. Nash and attorney Robert M. Sawyer to the panel.

Dowdy said applicants interested in the new vacancy should apply before Nov. 30, and that the council would make the appointment in December.
