COSTA MESA : Complete Water Plan a Few Months Away
A strategic plan designed to lead the Mesa Consolidated Water District into the 21st Century should be finished by the beginning of next year.
At last week’s board meeting, members refined the plan, made some grammatical changes and talked about completing it for public view by January.
The overview of the district’s operations has been in the works for two years, said Mary Urashima, the district’s public affairs manager. Board members believe the demand for water will gradually increase, especially in the residential areas.
The strategic plan analyzes the district’s needs in light of economic and demographic changes. It also factors in new federal and state regulations.
The 18-square-mile district serves 100,000 residents in Costa Mesa, parts of Newport Beach and unincorporated areas of the county, including John Wayne Airport. About 20,768 acre-feet--or 6.8 billion gallons--of water are provided each year, Urashima said.
Seventy percent of the water comes from the local ground-water basin in the northern and central parts of Orange County.
