Upon Further Review, Chatman Had 414 Yards

After a second look, Costa Mesa running back Charles Chatman’s attack on the Orange County rushing record fell short.

Chatman gained between 408 and 415 yards, according to various newspaper accounts, Friday in Costa Mesa’s 28-7 victory over Aliso Niguel. The single-game rushing record was set by Dana Hills’ Jim Gleed, who rushed for 418 in 1979.

Costa Mesa coaches reviewed the videotape over the weekend, and Coach Myron Miller said they had figured Chatman for 420 yards.

So on Monday, Miller allowed a media representative to review the videotape and come up with Chatman’s official total: 43 carries for 414 yards.

That figure is second in Orange County.

One statistic that might have doomed Chatman’s record attempt was fumbles--he had three.
