LOS ANGELES : Students at 2 Schools Stage Walkouts Over Prop. 187
Students in two more Los Angeles schools staged walkouts Wednesday to protest Proposition 187, which would deny most education, health and welfare benefits to illegal immigrants.
About 200 students at Locke High School skipped classes and marched along neighboring Avalon Boulevard. A police squad car trailed the demonstrators, who did not cause any trouble, said Sgt. Gary Bean of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southeast bureau.
Locke Principal Edward Robbs said the number of students involved in the two-hour protest swelled to 400 at one point. As they have on similar processions at other schools, students waved Mexican and Salvadoran flags before returning to class about 11 a.m.
A similar walkout occurred in North Hollywood at James Madison Junior High School.
About 100 students rushed out of the main gate and into traffic about 9:30 a.m., causing a minor disturbance before school administrators herded them back inside, said Sgt. F. Lopez of the LAPD’s North Hollywood bureau.
The protests are the latest in a series of demonstrations staged by students throughout the Los Angeles area, including protests at Venice, South Gate and Grant high schools.
