COLLEGE SOCCER : No. 1 Indiana Defeats UCLA, 2-0, but Fullerton Wins Tournament

It was billed as the feature game of the week in men’s college soccer, but top-ranked Indiana’s 2-0 victory over fourth-ranked UCLA on Sunday turned out to be little more than an afterthought to earlier games in the UCLA tournament.

It would have taken a remarkable game to upstage unranked Cal State Fullerton’s victory against Indiana on Friday. Instead, Indiana dominated the midfield and, as UCLA players became increasingly frustrated, play deteriorated.

Fullerton (10-6-2), which tied Notre Dame, 2-2, in overtime earlier in the day, won the tournament with a 1-0-1 record. UCLA (15-2) and Indiana (17-2) finished 1-1 and Notre Dame (8-9-2) was 0-1-1.

The Hoosiers scored in the 36th minute when Todd Yeagley received a corner kick from Joel Shanker and headed the ball toward the far post and into the net.

They scored again with 25 minutes left on an own goal by UCLA’s Brian Woolfolk, who was trying to defend against Yeagley’s free kick.

It was the first time UCLA has been shut out since Oct. 9, 1992, when it lost to New Mexico, 1-0.

Indiana’s midfield is led by three seniors, Yeagley, Brandon Ward and Brian Maisonneuve, who was named the tournament’s offensive MVP.

In the first game, Fullerton’s Eddie Soto tied the score on a penalty shot with 11 minutes remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime, 1-1.

With 10 minutes left in overtime, Tim Oates scored on a crossing pass from Ryan Turner to give Notre Dame the lead. Five minutes later, Matt Bradbury scored on a header toward the far post on a pass from Soto.
