GARDEN GROVE : Council to Consider Rejoining Cities League
The City Council today will consider whether to rejoin the League of California Cities, eight months after withdrawing from the organization.
Councilman Ho Chung is asking the council to reconsider the move, which he said has isolated the city.
In March, the council voted 3 to 2 to quit the league, saying that the city does not reap enough benefit from its $28,000 in annual dues.
Councilman Bruce A. Broadwater said at the time of the vote that the Orange County division of the organization has become a “social club.” He added that the city has an equal vote with smaller cities that pay lesser dues.
Council members Mark Leyes and Robert F. Dinsen joined Broadwater in voting to withdraw from the league. Mayor Frank Kessler and Chung voted to remain a member of the organization.
Kessler has cited the isolation that the withdrawal created as one of the key reasons why he decided not to seek reelection.
The Orange County division of the league works on countywide and regional issues on behalf of the cities.
The state league is composed of 470 cities. Redlands is the only other non-member.
