HUNTINGTON BEACH : Incumbent Leads Council Fund Race
- Share via
One candidate has raised nearly $50,000 to win one of four seats on the City Council in Tuesday’s election. Others plan on raising nothing or spending as little as possible.
Compared to past council races when candidates raised upward of $80,000, campaign fund raising and spending is down this year.
Some of the 22 candidates have refused to accept financial contributions. A few are amassing political war chests of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Many candidates will kick in their own money and nearly a dozen expect to spend $10,000 to $35,000 or more--in the hope of being among the lucky four.
Ralph H. Bauer has the biggest campaign war chest of more than $47,000 in his attempt to keep his seat. He was appointed to the council two years ago to complete the term of Jack Kelly who died in office.
David P. Garofalo plans to spend about $38,000 while a number of others expect to raise and spend more than $20,000.
Shirley S. Dettloff will spend about $29,000; Peter M. Green, about $23,000; Richard Henderson, about $35,000; Paul Horgan, about $19,000; Edward H. Kerins, about $15,000; and Susie Newman, about $28,000.
Those planning to spend $10,000 or less include: George E. Arnold, about $2,500; Thom Doney, about $3,000; Mary Mays-McCaughey, about $8,000; Roy H. Richardson, about $7,000; Steven A. Sherman, about $5,700; Daris L. Steen Sr., about $10,000, John A. Thomas, about $10,000 and Maureen R. Werft, about $4,400.
Candidates who plan to spend $1,000 or less include Steve Matus, Jonothon M. Cone, Jim W. Thomas, Vida Louise Martin and Dan A. Traxler. Emil (Jinx) Varona has refused to accept contributions.
