Tom Lehman shot a four-under-par 69 Friday for a two-round total of 135 and a two-stroke lead over defending champion Fred Couples and Bob Gilder in the Kapalua International in Hawaii.

Lehman, who had a five-under 66 over the shorter Bay Course in the first round, got started on the 7,263-yard Plantation Course with three long birdie putts--two from 40 feet and one from 30 feet. He also birdied No. 8 and closed with a 12-foot birdie on the 663-yard 18th.

Despite his performance, Lehman said the wind and rain that swept over the island of Maui made it difficult.

“It wasn’t easy out there,” he said. “I hit some shots that didn’t really come out.

Gilder, who started the day in a six-way tie for sixth, was surprised by his 67.

“I hit it terrible on the range,” he said, adding that it helped him concentrate harder.

Sharing fourth place at 139 were first-round leader Jim McGovern, who had a 73 on the Bay Course, Keith Clearwater, Jay Delsing and Barry Lane.
