Jason Said rushed for 114 yards to lead El Modena to a 21-6 victory over Santa Ana Valley Friday night.

Though Said didn’t score, he kept three second-quarter scoring drives alive with long runs on third down. The Vanguards (3-6, 1-3 in Century League) gained 275 yards on the ground against the Falcons (3-6, 1-3). Sophomore Aaron Santana rushed 16 times for 87 yards and quarterback Jeremy Seltzer carried five times for 50 yards.

The El Modena defense shut down Santa Ana Valley’s rushing attack, holding two runners to 70 yards. Kyle Marks, who started in place of injured leading rusher Dwayne Cherrington, was limited to 21 rushing yards.

“That’s the way we’re supposed to play defense,” El Modena Coach Steve Howard said. “But they can’t be the same team without Cherrington. That’s a hard loss to overcome.”

The Vanguards scored their three touchdowns in the second quarter. Santana’s one-yard and two-yard touchdown runs gave El Modena a 14-0 lead.

Santa Ana Valley fumbled on its next possession deep in its territory and El Modena took advantage when Seltzer scored on a 25-yard quarterback draw.

The Falcons made it 21-6 when Jason Parrett picked up a fumble at the El Modena 20 and raced 80 yards for the score on the last play of the third quarter.
