Councilman Richard Alatorre will hold a conference for senior citizens on safety, health care, consumer fraud and abuse of the elderly.

The Senior Citizens Festival/Conference will be Dec. 9 at the Luckman Theater at Cal State Los Angeles.

At a meeting in October of about 50 senior citizens from El Sereno, Eagle Rock, Highland Park and Boyle Heights, many participants said police and emergency response needs improvement, said Alatorre’s press deputy, Liz Chavez.

They also raised concerns about graffiti and said they would work with the city to improve conditions in their neighborhood.

“He was aware that there was a need for some forum to bring out a lot of those issues that he hears about, to disseminate information on a broad basis,” Chavez said.

The conference will provide information on health testing and screening, transportation and other services, current health legislation, consumer fraud and abuse of the elderly.

Among those invited to participate are former Rep. Edward R. Roybal and Dr. Fernando Torres Gil, deputy secretary of Health and Human Services.

The free conference will include breakfast, lunch and transportation from senior centers throughout District 14. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and buses will return to the centers at 2 p.m.
