Much Caution Needed in Dealing With Contractors

Share

Andrea Hecht touched the tip of an iceberg in her commentary on the difficulty of finding people to do earthquake repair (“Time For Contractors To Build a Rapport With Clients,” Oct. 16).

Many of these “professionals” were not that to begin with, and the high demand for their services is now aggravating that problem. Homeowners frequently add fuel to the fire by not managing their own affairs. The result can be a travesty.

I recommend the publication “What You Should Know Before You Hire a Contractor,” available from the Contractor’s State License Board (800) 321-2752. Read and heed.

Apropos, do not ever pay for an estimate. It is part of the overhead costs of running a service business. Ask any professional.
