A summary of selected City Hall actions last week that affect the Westside.

CITY COUNCIL

* EGYPTIAN THEATER--Voted to open negotiations with American Cinematheque on the possible sale of the Egyptian Theater at 6708 Hollywood Blvd. by the Community Redevelopment Agency. Once one of the city’s premier movie theaters, the 1922 building was purchased by the CRA in 1993 for restoration and preservation. But the Jan. 17 earthquake caused an estimated $4 million in damages to the theater, and the CRA foresees only being able to finance those repairs. Plans for the renovation have been dropped.

* HISTORIC DESIGNATION--Voted to include the Hollywood School/Women’s Club, a 1909 building at 1749 N. La Brea Ave., on the city’s list of Historic-Cultural Monuments.

* STREET NAME--Approved the name Rustic Creek Lane for a previously unnamed private street at Sunset Boulevard near Will Rogers State Park.

HOW THEY VOTED

* HIRING FREEZE LIFTED--Approved an exemption to the city’s hiring freeze that will allow the Department of Parks and Recreation to fill 105 gardening positions. The jobs--72 gardener caretakers and 33 senior gardeners--will involve work at city parks. Those who opposed the motion did so because they favored a more ambitious plan that would have allowed the parks and recreation department an exemption to fill 1,166 positions as they become vacant. A vote on that latter plan was rescheduled for Nov. 15. Passed 9-5.

Voting yes: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Jackie Goldberg, Nate Holden, Zev Yaroslavsky.

Voting No: Mark Ridley-Thomas.

Absent: Ruth Galanter.
