Newport-Mesa Unified School District meeting

Where: Harper Community Center, 425 E. 18th St., Costa Mesa.

What: The school board will hold a special meeting on the eve of an election that will usher in at least three new trustees. Normally the board meets on alternate Tuesdays, but the meeting was rescheduled because of the election. The board is expected to give final approval to a program to have Costa Mesa and Newport Beach police dogs sniff-search lockers and cars at the district’s high schools and middle schools.

Costa Mesa

City Council meeting

When: Tonight, 6:30

Where: Costa Mesa City Hall Council Chambers, 77 Fairview Drive, Costa Mesa

What: An advisory group will present alternatives to building two bridges over the Santa Ana River at Banning and 19th streets and Gisler and Garfield avenues. The group of residents and staff members from Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Costa Mesa is opposed to building the bridges, which they said would create too much traffic and harm the environment. Among the alternatives: connecting Garfield Avenue to the Costa Mesa Freeway and/or the San Diego Freeway; evaluate widening Pacific Coast Highway and Victoria Street; evaluate widening Ellis Street and Pacific Coast Highway, and extending 17th Street to Brookhurst Street through Bluff Road.

Capistrano Unified School District board meeting

When: Tonight, 7

Where: Education Center, 32972 Calle Perfecto.

What: The school board will consider a workshop on Parental Involvement. The district’s strategic plan calls for the board to adopt a policy on parental involvement. Research on the subject shows that students perform better when their parents take a more active role in their children’s education.

Huntington Beach

City Council meeting

When: Tonight, 6:30

Where: Huntington Beach City Council Chambers, 2000 Main St.

What: The council, acting as the Huntington Beach Public Financing Authority, will hold a hearing to consider issuing $4.6 million in tax bonds to finance the purchase and rehabilitation of a multifamily rental housing development, known as Mora Kai Apartments, 18881 Mora Kai Lane. The complex would be turned into an affordable housing project.
