OXNARD : Crowd’s Cheers Boost Disabled Athletes

Share

Spectator enthusiasm propelled two local disabled men through the Catalina Triathlon this weekend.

Danny Robinson of Ventura and Rene Verduzco of Oxnard competed as a relay team in the swim-ride-run event, with Robinson handling the swim and run and Verduzco completing the bike portion.

Both men have had a leg amputated below the knee. They competed wearing special prosthetic limbs.

Winning time for the race was 1:07. The Robinson-Verduzco team finished in 3:19.

“We beat a couple of people, so I don’t think we did so bad,” Verduzco said of his first triathlon. “The crowd was into it. They really cheered us on, especially if they noticed we were amputees.”

Both men plan to compete in the race next year.
