SIMI VALLEY : Homemade Bomb Shatters Windshield

Share

A homemade bomb shattered the early morning calm and a construction worker’s windshield in Simi Valley on Tuesday, but injured no one at the home where it exploded, police said.

Someone packed a small aluminum tube with explosive material, taped BBs to it and placed it on a white Ford Ranger pickup truck owned by Richard Diaz, 28, said Simi Valley Police Detective Roger Meffan.

The bomb went off about 5 a.m., damaging the truck and embedding shrapnel up to one-inch deep in the plywood door of the garage the truck was facing, Meffan said.

“If anyone was within 10 or 15 feet of it, it would have caused serious injury,” the detective said.

Diaz was asleep on the other side of house, and called police after the blast woke him, Meffan said.

Police say the bombing could have stemmed from a dispute between Meffan and a neighbor, but they are still trying to establish a clear motive for the attack.
