BREA : Project Improves Recreation Facilities
A collaborative effort between the county, Brea and the Brea Olinda Unified School District has resulted in $150,000 in improvements to recreation facilities at Laurel Elementary School and adjacent Lagos de Moreno Park.
The new facilities, which were dedicated late last month, are available for community use after school and on weekends. Half the funding was provided by the Brea Redevelopment Agency and the other half was provided by a grant from the county’s Third Supervisorial District.
“They did a wonderful job,” Laurel Principal Tim Harvey said. “It’s nice to see the community working together” for the benefit of children, seniors and the general public.
Improvements at the school include backstops and dugouts at the softball field, new handball courts, an additional volleyball court and a fitness station designed by the Project Fit America program to increase upper-body strength.
The school portion of the project includes an 85-foot outdoor mural that was designed and painted by a team of 12 Laurel Elementary students, and coordinated by third-grade teacher Dana Radding.
At the adjacent city park, new playground equipment was installed, and a roof and gas barbecues were added to the picnic area.
