Former Mayor Coleman Young was hospitalized Tuesday after a routine visit to the doctor detected an irregular heartbeat.

“It was not any sort of emergency,” said Young’s spokesman, Bob Berg.

“When I talked to him, he certainly was in good spirits, except for how the elections seemed to be going,” Berg said of the Democrat who presided over Detroit for an unprecedented five terms.

Young was elected mayor in 1973. He decided not to run for reelection in 1993 because of health problems.

Berg said Young, 76, would be hospitalized for a day or two.

Young was hospitalized at least twice in 1991 and 1992 for heart and respiratory problems.
