LONG BEACH : Effort to Cut Lead Levels Gets a $6-Million Boost
The federal government has awarded a $6-million grant to the city to get the lead out--of paint, that is.
The grant from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department will be used primarily to fund community education programs and for blood testing efforts to screen for dangerous lead levels. Loans and grants will also be offered to owners of low-income housing to assist in the removal of lead-based paints from living areas.
Similar funds will be offered to 25 to 30 communities nationwide that applied for the federal grant in hopes of reducing lead levels in privately owned low-income housing, Mayor Beverly O’Neill said. In Long Beach, the project will be run out of the city’s Health and Human Services Department.
