Countywide : Seminar Set on AIDS in Workplace

“HIV/AIDS in the Workplace,” a seminar for employers, will be conducted by the Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross at its headquarters in Santa Ana. The free seminar is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon today.

National statistics indicate that more than two-thirds of large workplaces and almost one-tenth of small companies have employees who are HIV-positive or have AIDS. In Orange County, there have been nearly 3,500 documented cases of AIDS, a Red Cross spokeswoman said. It is estimated that an additional 8,000 to 12,000 people in the county are infected with HIV.

The Red Cross seminar will explore both legal and humanitarian issues concerning employees with HIV/AIDS. Specific topics will include:

* The Americans With Disabilities Act and the protections it affords employees.

* How to understand and support employees or co-workers who have the disease.

* The availability of various workplace programs concerning HIV/AIDS.

In addition, the Red Cross will preview a new video, “Preventing Disease Transmission.”
