NEWPORT BEACH COSTA MESA : Schools Foundation to Present Grants
Sixty teachers in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa schools will get a total of 54 grants for projects from the Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation, a foundation representative told the school board this week.
The grants, averaging $846, will be presented at a breakfast Nov. 29 at the Balboa Bay Club. Details of the winning requests will be disclosed at that time.
Grants totaling $45,664 will go to teachers in a variety of instructional areas at 21 schools.
The grants will go for science projects, computer hardware and software, math programs, reading and literature programs, art and music, English and languages classes and other programs.
Teachers will use the grants to meet needs the district could not fund for the current school year. They were required to show that the items requested would directly benefit students, improve the learning environment, increase the effectiveness of teaching and raise the expectations of teachers and students.
A total of 191 teachers, some working in teams, turned in 177 grant applications seeking a total of $152,223. The average amount requested was $860, and foundation spokeswoman Kim Kasell said the foundation tried to keep grants to $1,000 or less.
The foundation is a volunteer support group formed in 1981 to fill funding gaps left by Proposition 13 and court decisions that shifted school funding sources.
