MIDWAY CITY : New Trash-Collection System to Start Soon
Residents will be able to separate their trash from recyclable materials more efficiently under a new trash-collection program that the Midway City Sanitary District will begin next month.
Each household will receive a black 100-gallon bin for trash and a blue 100-gallon container for aluminum cans, newspapers and other recyclable materials. Both containers have wheels to make collection easier.
General Manager Don Snavely said the program will enable the district to recycle more materials and reduce the amount of trash taken to landfills, as required by state law.
The 1989 law requires cities and special districts to reduce by 25% the amount of trash taken to dump sites by 1995. By 2000, they must achieve a 50% reduction.
Snavely said trash collected from about 21,250 customers in Midway City, Westminster and portions of Garden Grove is taken to materials recovery facilities in Stanton and Huntington Beach, where it is sorted.
Some residents will receive the containers this month to test the program in certain areas of the district, Snavely said. Distribution of the containers is expected to be completed in January, he said.
