Supervisors OK Funds for Homeless

Ventura County will spend $22,000 to fund a portion of an emergency shelter for the homeless that would be operated at the Oxnard National Guard Armory, the Board of Supervisors has decided.

Under the agreement, which was approved unanimously Tuesday, the American Red Cross will use the money to pay part of the $90,000 cost of operating the wintertime shelter between Dec. 15 and March 14, 1995.

The Ventura County chapter of the American Red Cross has operated the facility since 1987, providing beds and hot meals to as many as 120 people each night.

Most of the money comes from a federal grant awarded to the Red Cross, but the cities of Ventura and Oxnard also chipped in to keep the armory open this winter season.

Officials estimate the shelter will provide the homeless with as many as 10,000 nights of service this year, at a cost of about $9 each.
