The City Council has awarded $10,800 in grants to help community service and cultural organizations, with the largest amount--$2,250--going to the Capistrano Valley Symphony for children’s concerts.

Twenty-four groups applied for the grants, but only nine received funding.

The biggest grant for community service was $1,800, which was given to South County Safe Rides to provide rides home for intoxicated youths.

Six other organizations, mostly groups that aid troubled children and battered women, received community service grants.

Laura’s House Walk-in Center received $750, and the other abused women’s shelter, Human Options, received $500.

South Orange County Community Services Council was awarded $1,500, while YMCA Counseling Services will receive $500 for its student assistance program.

The Parent-Teacher Assn. at Hidden Hills Elementary received $500 of the cultural arts funds for its “History Through Music” program.

The council decided not to award $9,360 of the grants. That money will be used later this year to look at how local library service can be expanded.
