Santa Ana : Health and Safety Fair Set for Flower Park

Share

Two dozen volunteers with the Clinton Administration’s AmeriCorps program will offer a health and safety fair in Santa Ana’s beleaguered 3rd Street neighborhood Saturday and Sunday to offer free child immunizations and identification cards for children.

The fair marks the first project for the AmeriCorps volunteers, who came to Santa Ana’s nonprofit Civic Center Barrio Housing Corp. last month under Clinton’s version of a domestic Peace Corps. The youths will be working to develop social programs that improve health and education and crack down on crime, said Helen Brown, Civic Center Barrio president.

The weekend fair will follow a neighborhood cleanup along 3rd Street, long dominated by a tough local gang and the recent focus of a five-month undercover police operation that landed many gang members in jail.

The free event will take place in Flower Park on Flower and 3rd streets from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Orange County Health Services employees will be offering immunizations for rubella, polio and hepatitis B. There will also be free dental screening and other health services. Parents must be present for child immunizations.

The fair also will feature face painting, a mobile library and mobile museum, and “Barney,” the talking police car.
