1 of 8 Unions in Newspaper Strike to Vote on Accord
San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan announced Thursday night that a tentative agreement had been made with one of the unions involved in the strike against the city’s two major daily newspapers.
The tentative agreement was made with the 46-member machinists union.
“This doesn’t mean to say we are going to settle the strike . . . but it’s a strong step in the right direction,” Jordan said.
Machinists’ representatives said there was enough progress made with the agreement that it could be presented to members. But neither side would discuss terms of the proposal.
Jordan said talks would continue today with the other seven unions for the San Francisco Examiner and San Francisco Chronicle.
Delivery drivers, reporters, ad sales workers and printers walked off their jobs Nov. 1 at the Chronicle and Examiner.
The walkout began after negotiators failed to reach an agreement on the future of about 150 delivery driver jobs, a pay raise and other issues. The labor contracts expired Nov. 1, 1993.
