Redevelopment Works in Fullerton
The limitations of space prevent a point-by-point rebuttal of Councilman Chris Norby’s distortions and misstatements (to put it politely) about redevelopment in Fullerton (Letters, Oct. 30).
But a few are so bizarre they need immediate correction.
Norby calls Loehmann’s the anchor store of the Metro Center. This is absurd. To name but two, Montgomery Ward and Sportmart do much more business, and Loehmann’s has been there only two years. As for Norby’s statement that there was no net gain of sales tax revenue to Fullerton because the store only moved from another location in the city: Is he saying that Loehmann’s generates no more sales volume at its present high-traffic location than it did at its previous isolated locations? That simply isn’t so.
Does Norby want Fullerton to step aside and allow other cities and counties to take the businesses that have made it possible for homeowners to enjoy splendid police and fire protection and the other amenities of a fine city for so many years without any significant increased costs? It sounds like Norby is more interested in trashing government than in finding practicable solutions that benefit taxpayers.
Other cities may have had problems with redevelopment. But it works in Fullerton, and it works very well indeed.
