COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Get First Volleyball Victory of Season

The Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball team won its first match of the season Saturday night, beating host Utah State in four games.

The Titans’ victory 17-15, 15-12, 15-8, 15-11, ended a 35-game losing streak that started last season.

Jennifer Lipski had 18 kills and Chelsea Wilhite added 16 for the Titans (1-25).

In another Big West match:

Long Beach State 3, Pacific 2--Nichelle Burton had 23 kills to lead Long Beach State (22-4, 16-2) to the conference championship, 6-15, 15-6, 15-13, 13-15, 15-12.

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo tournament:

California 10, UC Irvine 9--Third-ranked Cal overcame a one-goal deficit in the fourth quarter and edged UCI (9-12).

In NCAA District 8 cross-country:

UCI men place seventh--Bryan Contreras finished 26th in 32:33 to lead the Anteaters to a seventh-place finish in Tucson, Ariz.

Cal State Fullerton was 12th and Long Beach State 13th.

The UCI women’s team finished ninth and was led by Jo Jo Yaba, who was 33rd with a time of 18:48. The Titan women were 12th and the 49ers were 13th.

In the Rolex-ITA Southern California women’s tennis regional:

Phebus stays alive--Top-seeded Keri Phebus of UCLA, who played at Corona del Mar High, defeated seventh-seeded Isabela Petrov of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

In nonconference swimming and diving:

UCI led by relay team--The UC Irvine men’s swim team defeated New Mexico State, 120-102.

The women’s swim team fell to the Aggies, 140-95.

In the NAIA Far West Region women’s volleyball playoffs:

Southern California College 3, The Master’s 0--Celeste Young and Genevie Wright each had nine kills to lead fifth-seeded Southern California College, (18-10), 15-9, 15-12, 15-10, in the first round.
