PACK RAT: North Hollywood’s Don Hyatt Martin is a collector of, well, everything. And the piles of stuff he collects usually become loads of trouble for city sanitation workers. On Monday, they spent their eighth day hauling away garbage from his house (B6). . . . This is the third time since the mid-1980s that city officials have had to clean up his property.

HOT LINE: For businesses looking for honest feedback from their employees, the answer might be Pinkerton. The Encino-based security services company takes calls--anonymously--from employees who want to complain about unfair treatment, harassment and safety concerns. . . . Companies hire Pinkerton to provide this service. See Valley Business, Page 4.

NEW HOMES: The American Dream is alive and well in the Valley. New homes are selling, and some banks are getting into real estate development again. That’s good news for people like Dee Dee and Jack Petty, above, who just moved to Woodside Homes. . . . Several large, publicly traded home builders have moved in to take advantage of cheap land. See Valley Business, Page 10.

POOCH ON THE LOOSE: Martina Navratilova has never played a big tennis match in the Valley, but she once had a big crisis here. In 1986, Navratilova, who begins the final tournament of her career today in New York (C4), lost one of her precious traveling dogs, Yonni the Shiba, in Sherman Oaks. . . . She flooded the area with posters, and offered a $1,000 reward. Yonni was found the next day.

NEW FACES: Women are making new inroads in the boardroom. More than half of the Fortune 500 companies have a woman on their boards, reports Catalyst, a New York research group. That comes as no shock to Linda Wachner, CEO of the Van Nuys-based Authentic Fitness Corp. . . . “There are tons of intelligent women that can give the energy and insight to be a good board member,” she says.
