GETTING INSIDE: How much do you hate...

GETTING INSIDE: How much do you hate tobacco smoke? Enough to wear your clothes inside-out for a day? . . . . That’s what the American Cancer Society wants from you on Thursday, for its annual “Great American Smoke-Out” day. It’s seeking help from hundreds of local companies. Says spokeswoman Jennifer Guenette: “If what happens on your inside, happened on your outside, would you still smoke?” . . . . Will people really do this? Yes, she says, if they want to “lighten up instead of light up.”

BOOMING MORNING: What happens in Southern California when your walls shake a little and you hear a booming noise? . . . . “I thought it was an earthquake,” says Lettie Ajawara of Mission Viejo. This time it was something in the air, not in the ground. . . . Monday morning the space shuttle Atlantis landed at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert--instead of Florida as planned. The booming sound as it re-entered the earth’s atmosphere about 7:30 a.m. could be heard throughout the county.

MEGA-GIVERS: After years of generous giving--in time and money--by developer Charles Hester and his wife, Nora, of Corona del Mar, the thank-yous are rolling in. . . . Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian this year honored them as the “Sweet Heart Couple” for their efforts. Now, in one week’s span, they’ve been chosen honorary chair for events by both Chapman University and the Boys and Girls Clubs. Today the couple will be honored at a breakfast at the Hyatt Regency Irvine Hotel on National Philanthropy Day, by the local society of fund-raising executives.

FAMILIAR FACE? The Southern Section high school football playoffs usually offer local teams a chance to play unfamiliar opponents. But not in Division V this year--all its 16 teams are from Orange County (Prep Extra, V1). . . . Top seeded is Sea View League champion Newport Harbor Sailors (10-0). No. 2 is the Savanna Rebels of Anaheim (8-2), the Orange League champion.
