RESEDA : Hazardous Waste Disposal Planned

The city’s “Hazmobile” will visit Reseda beginning Thursday as part of the Bureau of Sanitation’s household hazardous waste collection program.

People are asked to make appointments for hazardous-waste disposal by calling the hot line at (800) 98-TOXIC, or (800) 988-6942, said Jackie David, the bureau’s public information director.

Callers will then be told where to take the materials, she said. They also will be sent a map to direct them to the collection center.

Appointments can be scheduled between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., David said.

In Reseda, appointments can be scheduled on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and Dec. 1-3.

By law, motorists are not allowed to transport in their vehicles more than a five-gallon container, or more than 50 pounds of hazardous waste, she said. The so-called Hazmobile transports the materials for disposal.

The Hazmobile program is part of a countywide effort co-sponsored by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

Among wastes that are considered hazardous are paint, motor oil, pesticides, cleaners and other common household materials labeled toxic, corrosive or flammable liquids and poisons, David said. The collections are conducted to prevent people from disposing of the materials illegally, such as by dumping them in sewers, she said.
