LONG BEACH : 7th Street Cleanup to Unite City Groups

Share

A coalition of community groups from throughout the city will join together Saturday to spruce up 7th Street from the Long Beach Freeway to the city’s eastern border.

Dozens of neighborhood associations and business organizations have pledged tools and time to pick up trash, manicure greenery and sweep along the six-mile thoroughfare.

Much of the work will be done on the street’s west end, which is inundated with litter, said project organizer Michele Harris, president of the United South of Seventh Neighborhood Assn.

Since August, the idea for the cleanup project has spread across the city, Harris said, stirring pride usually reserved for nearby Ocean Boulevard, which she called the city’s front door.

“We just don’t want 7th Street to be considered the back door. There are a lot of active neighborhoods along 7th Street,” she said.

Work stations will open at 8:30 a.m. and will be set up where 7th intersects Locust, Orange and Park avenues. Coffee and pastries will be available.
