BURBANK : Equestrian Center Helps in Toy Drive
The Los Angeles Equestrian Center, working with an organization that collects toys, clothing, books and other items for Native American children on reservations throughout the West, has set a Dec. 12 deadline to receive donations for a holiday drive.
The Red Cloud Indian Society in Irvine is trying to double the 3,400 contributions it received last year.
Gifts, wrapped and labeled for a boy or a girl and with the recipient’s age, can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the equestrian center, 480 Riverside Drive in Burbank. The children need new clothing, school and art supplies, toys and sports equipment for children from age 2 to the teen-age years.
The is the eighth year that the Red Cloud Society has run a toy drive campaign for poor Native Americans. The gifts go to children on 20 reservations or with Native American groups in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Minnesota.
The society deals with issues such as hunger, housing and the education of Native Americans. The Equestrian Center joined the toy drive two years ago and collected about 100 toys that year, said Jana Olson-Collins, a center spokeswoman.
Other charities, such as the Telephone Pioneers of America, and businesses, such as Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, also donate toys.
Gift-wrapped items are preferred, but wrapping is not mandatory, Olson-Collins said.
The society also is collecting clothing and boots.
