Matsushita Relocating Facility to San Diego: Matsushita Television Co. of Japan will move its Franklin Park, Ill., headquarters office for North American research and engineering early next year. Matsushita’s move to the new 110,000-square-foot facility in the Otay Mesa area near the U.S.-Mexico border will bring 120 high-paying jobs to San Diego, city officials said. The Japanese consumer electronics giant has several TV plants employing 3,000 workers in Tijuana, where it primarily manufactures Panasonic sets. The company, which had announced earlier that it was looking at sites in Southern California, said it was attracted by San Diego’s strategic location for Latin American and Pacfic Rim trade and by financial incentives--mainly fee waivers--valued by Mayor Susan Golding at about $150,000.
