NEWPORT BEACH : Open Enrollment for Paramedic Service
The city has made it easier for residents to subscribe to its paramedic program by allowing open enrollment and making other changes.
Paramedics answer all city emergency medical calls, but residents have the choice of paying a $42-a-year fee for unlimited service or paying by the call--$150 for basic life-support services or $250 for advanced life support required in trauma cases.
When the city began offering subscriptions in July, 1993, subscribers could enroll only by the year, from July of one year through June of the next.
After 15 months of running the program, Fire Department officials have found that residents want to be able to begin their subscriptions at any time.
The city also will begin automatic renewal, sending bills to subscribers at the end of each 12-month subscription and giving two weeks’ notice of cancellation if the fees are not paid.
In other actions related to public safety services, the City Council this week approved the sale of a 1970 Mack fire engine to Ensenada, Mexico, for $5,750 and approved a letter of intent to buy 10 new police cruisers for $202,559.
The 1995 Chevrolet Caprice cruisers will replace 10 1992 Caprice cruisers that are expected to exceed their 75,000-mile service life by January.
